WHAT THE PAPERS ARE SAYING ABOUT IRMA VEP ON ICECAPADES

Drowned In Sound

Anyone that’s a fan of (Manchester based) ramshackle noiseniks Klaus Kinski may be aware of Edwin Stevens. Irma Vep is the side project of the Welsh-born musician and is a deranged, drawn out drone of a record, punctuated with lacerated glottal stops. Stevens hangs conventional blues on a rack and pulls at the levers to leave it writhing and groaning, involuntarily splintering out fuzz and distortion… An uncomfortably thrilling listen.

20 Jazz Funk Greats

Pagan war drums at some Midwestern call to prayer. Battered metal PA’s affixed to crumbling desert buildings blaring out heartfelt pain and anguish. Crows perched atop the adobe walls, watching the deserted streets below. Rusty guns fusing with their rotting holsters. Lightning rolling over Dales rendered deserts by some primitive cataclysm. Scarred vistas and snatched memories of tribal terror. Executioner Blues is all these things too.

Irma Vep make evocative music, it seems. Evocative music that taps into the axis of Cormac McCarthy’s dusty despair and the thundering beat of hooves that herald the scratchy wail of the damned.

Pigeon Post

Put out by fledgling label Icecapades, there are few words that can accurately describe the noise that emanates for it’s 33 and a half minutes. Joined by ‘the Avalanche band’ on the record, there’s a very definite hint of the tribal rhythms that make Mi Ami such an engaging listen, soaking their husk in glorious drone. It feels somehow euphoric as wave after wave of noise, backed by mathematically precise drumming and an array of backing instruments join in the crescendo. In the flesh, Irma Vep is a very different proposition altogether… offering a haunting vulnerability in place of the almost math-rock sound captured on ‘Goodbye 33…’… until the  cold embrace of Winter is upon, you should do your best to snap up one of the 50 handmade copies of ‘Goodbye 33, hello plastic furniture’ if you can.

Comfortable On A Tightrope

Recorded with the assistance, equipment and expertise of Karl Sveinnson…  ‘Goodbye 33..’ contains the heaviest and most rocking Irma Vep songs we’ve had the good fortune to hear. Multi-tracked guitars (one locked in hypnotic grooves, one searing) and propulsive drums, chants and incantations. Another total mindblower.
